Dewey 'Bud' C. Hogard, 85

| October 15, 2012 11:45 PM

Dewey “Bud” C. Hogard passed away Aug. 21, 2012, in Boise, Idaho, due to natural causes.

He was born on Nov. 11, 1926. His parents, Dewey Calvert and Eva, raised him, along with his two brothers and four sisters on a ranch in the Jordan Valley, Ore., area.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Stonewall. He was very proud of his military service and maintained ties to VFW and other veteran groups for many years thereafter.

Returning to Boise after the war, he married Erma Lough, and son Guy Lee was born. He later married Irene Wargelin and, with son Stephen, moved to the Flathead Valley. The new family grew to include son Kurt and daughter K. Karol.

While his initial interest in moving to Montana was to work with horses, he maintained an interest in a wide range of subjects and was employed at a variety of jobs, sometimes two and three at a time. He and Irene operated an accounting business both before and after he retired from the Columbia Falls Aluminum plant.

Dewey took full advantage of the Montana outdoors with regular pursuits hunting and fishing, often just "taking another look" at the area he knew and loved. He particularly enjoyed finding new places of interest to add to those he already knew. He was a people person, easily striking up new relationships and friendships.

With the death of Irene, Dewey returned to Idaho to rekindle his relationships with Guy Lee and Erma. The couple remarried in Boise in 2001. Erma preceded Dewey in death. In his last years, Loren Colson assumed the role of companion and caregiver, providing incredible support as Dewey’s health declined. Even with declining health, he would ask about old friends and families.

Dewey is survived by Guy Lee of Boise and K. Karol of Idaho, son Stephen who resides in the Philippines, and Kurt of Columbia Falls; granddaughters, Angie and Scandia, and grandsons Chad, Cyrus and Christopher; and his adopted family of sons, daughters, grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren.

It was his wish for his ashes to be laid to rest next to those of Irene Hogard.

His final inurnment will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 22 at Glacier Memorial Gardens in Kalispell.
