Montana tradition continues

Hunting is a grand tradition made up of smaller traditions that are unique to many families in Montana. But one common element is that autumn is the time to bring home the meat.

It all gets under way today, with youth hunters ages 12-15 being able to take to the field for two days before the general big-game rifle season opens Saturday.

We’re hoping that the results will be better than last year, when hunters ended the five-week season with significantly lower success than the previous year, according to game counts at the six Northwest Montana check stations.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials are expecting improvements for a variety of reasons, and that should be somewhat encouraging.

Good luck, hunters!

OUR HEARTFELT sympathy goes out to the family of Bill Boharski, a former Kalispell mayor and state legislator who died last week following an accident on a wheelchair lift.

Boharski had been confined to a wheelchair since 1983 when he was in a car accident that left him a quadriplegic during his senior year at Montana State University. But he never let his adversity get in the way of public service.

At the age of 27 he won his first term in the Montana House of Representatives and served five consecutive two-year terms representing Kalispell. Later, Boharski turned his attention to city government, winning the mayoral contest in 1997 over incumbent Doug Rauthe. He served as mayor through 2001.

Boharski aspired to serve in county government, too, and made an unsuccessful run for commissioner in 2000.

Such an exemplary life of serving one’s fellow citizens is noteworthy and commendable.

COUNT IT among life’s guilty pleasures — but surely having a chance to be part of the filming of “The Bachelor” reality TV show was high on a lot of people’s “bucket lists.”

For several hundred people in the Flathead Valley, that item can now be crossed off!

When season 17’s “Bachelor” Sean Lowe arrived at Central Avenue in Whitefish with his date after a romantic dinner, they were greeted by an excited crowd of well-wishers enjoying a concert by Nashville sensation Sarah Darling.

Everyone had a good time, even though it must have truly been a peculiar experience to kiss your a date while standing on a platform high above a crowd of hundreds of screaming fans while a cameraman recorded the intimate moment from mere inches away!

Now we have to wait until the ABC show starts the new season in January to find out how things turned out between Sean and the many women courting him.

One thing is certain, however; Whitefish scored a major marketing coup by bringing “The Bachelor” and Sarah Darling to town — this is publicity that will pay off in a big way for years to come.
