New artists sought for competition

| October 17, 2012 5:30 PM

The Hockaday Museum of Art’s third annual emerging artist competition has begun.

“Catch the Vision: From Dreams to Discovery” is a contest devoted to the discovery, introduction and promotion of emerging artists. The museum’s goal is to help the emerging artist gain confidence, assist in the development of skills, aid in building professional connections and gain experience exhibiting in a professional gallery setting.

The competition is open to all Montana-resident artists working in any media who are in the beginning stages of their career as a professional artist. To meet eligibility requirements, artists cannot be represented by a commercial gallery or have had a solo exhibition in a gallery or museum setting.

Artists of any age are encouraged to apply, although artists under 18 need a parent’s permission to participate.

The first-place award will feature the winning artist in a solo exhibition in the Community Gallery at the Hockaday Museum of Art. Second place awards the artist with paid tuition to a professional workshop of their choice held at the Hockaday. The third-place artist will be awarded with three paid sessions at the Hockaday’s Crits and Croissants event, in which they will have their work reviewed by a professional artist.

All winners will be published in the Hockaday Museum of Art weekly NewsFlash email and on the website, and will receive an award certificate.

Submissions are to be made online at www.hockadaymuseum.org no later than Dec. 1. Notifications will be sent to participants on Dec. 14.

Information on entry method, materials, fees, payment and rules can be found on the website under the “Artist Opportunities” tab.

“Catch the Vision: From Dreams to Discovery” will be on exhibit at the Hockaday from Jan. 4 through Feb. 23. Award winners will be posted at the exhibition’s opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 10.
