Classes for knitters, felters at Camas Creek

| October 31, 2012 4:30 PM

A Kalispell yarn store offers several classes for knitters and felters this month.

Camas Creek Yarn, located at 338 Main St., will offer sessions on everything from dog leashes to coffee cozies to cowls in November. For additional information about any of the classes or to sign up, drop by the store, call 755-9276 or visit www.camascreekyarn.com.

Following is a list of November classes:

I-cord felted dog leash

Margaret Harrison teaches this class from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday. Previous knitting experience is recommended. The cost is $30.

In this class, students will learn to create I-cord while making a colorful, felted dog leash. It can be customized to any color and embellished to make each leash one of a kind.

Freeform cowl

Sue Birky leads this class from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The cost is $25. Some experience with knitting in the round is recommended.

In this class, students will make a cowl with a collection of yarns, different colors and unique stitches.

Beginning Portuguese knitting technique

Jodie Coston leads this class from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Cost is $25; students should have experience casting on and binding of projects.

This class is for people with repetitive stress injuries from too much knitting or whose arthritis in their fingers bothers them when they knit. Portuguese knitting allows knitters to control the yarn’s tension, and a simple flick of the thumb is used to create stitches, which puts less strain on the hands.

The session will cover knit and purl techniques. A simple cowl pattern is included.

Goof-proofing your knitting

Debbie Arnold teaches this class from 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 8. Cast on, knit and bind off experience is recommended for the session, which costs $30.

The class is a “fear-buster” for dropping stitches, ripping out and putting stitches back on the needles correctly, garments that don’t fit and knitted fabric that just doesn’t work. Students will learn to read their knitting and create a quick and easy-to-read gauge swatch that will help them get what they want from knitted projects.

There is homework for this class: Students should show up with a swatch prepared. Cast on 24 stitches and work four rows in garter stitch (knit every row) in light-colored worsted weight yarn on size 8 or 9 needles.

Double knitting: Coffee cozy

Margaret Harrison leads this class from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 9. The cost is $45, and previous experience knitting and purling is recommended.

The class will teach students reversible two-color knitting, which makes their work twice as warm and twice as colorful. The technique can be used for everything from a reversible scarf to extra-warm mittens to button bands and more. The coffee cozy will be made in class as a sample.

Bump, bobble and button baby hat

Sue Birky teaches this class from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12. Cost is $25, and the class is recommended for intermediate knitters — those with experience knitting in the round and making decorative stitches.

The class will teach students how to knit a cute baby hat with different colors, textures and buttons.

The Magic of Felt: Special Little Bowl

Paula Rindal will offer this all-day class twice, once on Nov. 14 and again on Nov. 28. The class runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will teach people to use a resist to create a seamless felted bowl.

No previous experience is necessary. The session costs $35 plus $6.95 for an embellishment kit.

Baby top-down sweater

Jodie Coston teaches this class from 6 to 8 p.m. in two sessions, Nov. 14 and 28. The cost is $35, and previous experience casting on, knitting, purling and binding off is recommended.

The baby sweater will push knitters beyond scarf projects. It incorporates techniques such as knitting in the round, picking up and knitting stitches and increases and decreases.

Mobius cowl

Jodie Coston will offer this class from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 16 for $35. Previous experience casting on, knitting, purling and binding off is recommended.

Students will learn the mobius cast-on technique to make a cozy cowl; the pattern is included in the class.

The Magic of Felt: Cobweb Scarf or Shawl

Paula Rindal teaches this class from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17. The cost is $35; no previous experience is necessary.

With soap, water and bubble wrap, students will create a beautiful designer scarf. The class is held downstairs in the yarn shop, so students should not have access challenges. They should also wear comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of standing time in this class.

Circle scarf

Sue Birky teaches this class from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 20. The cost is $25, and beginner experience knitting in the round is recommended.

This class will teach students to make a unique scarf that looks like a necklace of yarn with different rings of color.
