Confused kayaker rescued from river
A Canadian kayaker needed a little help getting back to her husband after losing track of where she was Thursday evening.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m., the 40-something woman’s husband — who was in their vehicle on land — reported she was lost somewhere on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River after having put in at West Glacier.
At some point in her trip down the river, she apparently rolled her kayak and bumped her head, but was able to make it to shore. While a helmet saved her from injury, she was unsure where on the river she was.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said the woman was able to call in on a cellphone, which led to the dispatching of the Sheriff’s Office, North Valley Search and Rescue, Coram-West Glacier Fire and a helicopter from Two Bear Aviation.
“The helicopter located her about two miles upstream from Blankenship Bridge and was able to ferry her back down to Blankenship, where she was evaluated by medical but not treated,” Curry said.
The woman was located shortly after 5:30 p.m. Search-and-rescue personnel were able to recover her kayak.
