Jazz stars come to the valley

| August 21, 2013 5:00 PM

Jazz stars John Pizzarelli and Monty Alexander will perform two shows in the Flathead Valley.

The John Pizzarelli Quartet plays in Whitefish and Bigfork Sept. 7 and 8.

Pizzarelli, the son of journeyman swing guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, is a storyteller, jazz guitarist and self-described “old-school” performer. He is a musician, singer and comedian. He has appeared on more than 40 albums with other artists, including Paul McCartney and Rosemary Clooney.

Jazz pianist Alexander has performed with everyone from Tony Bennett to Dizzy Gillespie to Bobby McFerrin. He played piano on the soundtrack for Clint Eastwood’s film “Bird” about the life of Charlie Parker, and he created a program for jazz at the Lincoln Center merging the rhythms of jazz with those of his native Jamaica and received a Grammy nomination for the recording.

Bassist Martin Pizzarelli, John’s brother, and drummer Tony Tedesco round out the quartet.

Catch the quartet at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center Sept. 7 and the Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts Sept. 8.

Performances are at 8 p.m. both nights.

Tickets range from $29 to $37 and are available at SingerandSimpson.com. Call (406) 730-2817 for assistance.
