Documentary focuses on dragon boats

| June 6, 2013 11:36 AM

The Flathead Community Foundation and Flathead Valley Community College will welcome the public to a screening of the award-winning feature documentary “Awaken the Dragon” on June 18. Directed by Liz Oakley, “Awaken the Dragon” reveals how the ancient Chinese sport of dragon boat racing is enabling cancer survivors to face their challenges with the courage and ferocity of an immortal creature.

The film introduces the audience to an unlikely crew of people whose unconventional path to wellness takes viewers on a remarkable journey of healing.

Wrapped in a sport that is a feast for the senses, this story of nail-biting competition and intimate revelations challenges traditional medical thinking and reveals a path to wellness that holds hope for all survivors.

The screening is free and open to the public; however, a $5 per person donation is encouraged at the door. Proceeds will support the Flathead Community Foundation, the title sponsor of the Montana Dragon Boat Festival to be held in September on Flathead Lake. The movie is 88 minutes in length.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with the show beginning at 7 p.m. in the large community meeting room inside the Arts and Technology Building at FVCC.  Refreshments will be served, and a raffle drawing for an evening of sailing and dinner on Flathead Lake will take place during the event.
