Junior golf: Avery, Johnston take titles

MISSOULA — Kalispell’s Teigan Avery and Libby’s Ryggs Johnston each won the Montana junior golf title for their age group at the state championships on Tuesday at Missoula Country Club.

Avery, who is entering her sophomore season at Glacier, annihilated the field in the 14-15 girls’ age group. She won the group by 24 strokes, shooting her final round at 2-over-par 73 to clinch the title. Her two-day tournament total of 150 was the best in any age group for the girls by seven strokes.

Johnston, a 12-year-old at Libby Middle School, tied for first place in the 13-and-under boys’ age group, shooting a 75 to stay even with Billings’ Joey Moore at 146 for the tournament.

Whitefish’s Art Doorn finished second in the 16-17 boys, shooting a 74 to finish at 146, falling four shots back of Billings’ Austin Berg after entering the day tied for the lead. Glacier’s Cody Sherrill closed his tournament with a 72 to finish in fifth place (149).

Glacier’s Tom Mann finished with a 152 to finish third among the 14-15 boys, three strokes behind the champion. Bigfork’s Ryan Keenan finish fifth in the group with a 158 and Whitefish’s Cooper Donahue shot 170 to finish 10th.

Polson’s Carson McDaniel finished fourth in 13U boys (168) and Kalispell’s Brayden Aurich was 17th (214).

Whitefish’s Erin Tabish finished in seventh among the 16-17 girls, shooting 172 for the tournament.
