A Whitefish man is in critical but stable condition and his wife is in jail after he was stabbed in the chest Monday evening.

Police responded to the home of Chad Newton, 37, and his wife, AnnMari, 39, after a 5:52 p.m. 911 call stating a man had been stabbed at 1115 O’Brien Ave., near the police department.

Emergency responders found Newton on the kitchen floor with a stab wound to the left side of his chest, allegedly inflicted by his wife during an argument.

Chad Newton was transported by ambulance to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery Monday night before being transferred to the intensive care unit.

AnnMari Newton was arrested without incident and is now incarcerated in the Flathead County Detention Center on a preliminary charge of aggravated assault. Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial said Flathead County Attorney Ed Corrigan had been to Whitefish twice in preparation for handling the case.

The Newtons’ two minor children were in the home at the time of the assault.

They were not injured and are now being cared for by a family friend at the direction of Child Protective Services.
