Alan James Counsell, 69

| October 5, 2013 10:00 PM

Alan James Counsell, 69, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 27, 2013, at his home in Kalispell.

Alan was born on Aug. 20, 1944, to Clinton and Ethel Counsell in Kalispell, and was the second oldest of five children. Alan grew up in Kalispell where he graduated from Flathead High School in 1962. After high school he joined the Coast Guard where he proudly served his country and developed a love of the ocean that lasted a lifetime.

After receiving his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, Alan spent time in Montana, Minnesota and the last great frontier state of Alaska. Leaving Montana to move to Alaska was one of the hardest decisions Alan had to make, as it meant being away from his children for extended periods of time. What he didn’t realize at the time was the adventure, opportunity and experience the decision would provide for his three children that followed him to Alaska. “Dad, we love you and thank you for sharing the adventure of a lifetime with us.”

During his life, Alan was married to three amazing women, Christina Jo Penn, Judy Nutzman and Marty Jean Fitchett.

Alan enjoyed numerous hobbies including fishing (especially on the ocean), hunting in the mountains and of course a good game of poker or pinochle with his family and friends. When it came to family and friends, there was nothing more important to him. Alan was never a materialistic person, but rather someone who always made sure to take care of those in need by supporting a variety of charities.

Alan is survived by three children, Anna Rose Counsell-Geyer of Forks, Wash., Clint Counsell of Belfair Wash., Mike Counsell of Salt Lake City; two brothers, Merle Counsell of Columbia Falls and Steve Counsell of Phoenix.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ron and David Counsell.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Richard Olexey for a lifetime of friendship to Alan. “Your friendship was unwavering and he appreciated everything you did for him.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Northwest Montana Veterans Stand Down, 1349 U.S. 2 East, Kalispell, MT 59901.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
