Helen Meyer, 84

Helen Meyer, 84, passed away Jan. 20, 2014, in Kalispell.

She was born June 10, 1929, in Cody, Wyo., to Oscar and Catherine Thompson. She was raised on a ranch a few miles north of Cody. She graduated from Cody High School in Wyoming, in 1949.

Helen married Francis L. Thorpe in Vernal, Utah. In her late 20s, her husband was killed due to a hunting accident near Aspen, Colo. She was left with an 11-year-old boy to raise. She owned a beauty shop business for many years in Grand Junction, Colo. It was one of the most popular shops in Grand Junction.

Helen met and married Homer Meyer in 1967. They then moved to Walden, Colo., in 1969. After three years at that location, they spent several years each in Canon City, Colo., and Oklahoma City. The final location prior to retirement was a 12-year stay in Roswell, N.M.  Preferring the Northwest, they moved to Kalispell to retire in 1995. 

During her journey through the states, she was quite proud that she obtained and held a Realtor license in Colorado, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

In retirement, Helen enjoyed collecting Mexican decor and Indian art.  Her favorite pastime was reading books by the hundreds. As friends observed, seldom did she go anywhere without a book in hand.

She was a member of Good Sams Rocky Mountain Rollers RV Club and enjoyed outings in the motorhome to various campgrounds.

 Helen's kind heart was an inspiration to her family and friends. She had a special ability to make people smile instantly with her dynamic personality. One of her special traits was her delight of wearing earrings (large) to nearly any destination.

She lived her life with integrity and bravery.

Helen is survived by her husband, Homer; son, Frank; sisters, Virginia James and Mona Linville; brothers, Dick and Oscar Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind two precious kitty cats, Blue Eyes and Wilson.

 A celebration of Helen's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Risen Christ Catholic Church.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Flathead County Animal Shelter, 1035 1st Avenue W., Kalispell, MT 59901.
