Carroll Edison Scarff, 82

Carroll Edison Scarff, 82, died Jan. 10, 2014, in Palm Desert, Calif. 

Cal was born Nov. 19,1931, in Auburn, Wash., the youngest of three sons  of Wayland and Della Scarff. After growing up in Redondo and Auburn, he graduated from Auburn High School in 1949. 

He enlisted in the Navy ROTC and graduated from the University of Washington in 1953. Following college, Cal started at his father’s Ford dealership, alongside his brothers, Robert and Bowen, at Scarff Ford Auburn. 

Throughout the years Cal enjoyed many outdoor activities with his family including golf, snow and water skiing, hiking, camping and fishing. Cal was an avid reader and golfer. 

In retirement years, Cal and Virginia loved wintering in Palm Desert and were active at Ironwood Golf and Country Club, being charter members. Cal was very involved with numerous civic activities and organizations in the valley: The YMCA; Auburn Rotary from 1963 to present, elected president in 1970; the Auburn Parks board from 1957 to 2000; Auburn Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year ’78 -’79; The Federal Way Library; Twin Lakes Golf Club; Auburn Golf Club; and Washington Junior Golf. He was also active at St. Matthew Episcopal Church in Tacoma/Brown's Point. 

Cal was preceded in death by father, Wayland, in 1962; mother, Della, in 1981; and by his wife, Virginia, who passed away in 2011; also his stepsons, Gary and Neal. 

Cal is survived by his daughter, Colleen, and Alan Smith, of Wenatchee, Wash.; sons, Greg and Peggy Scarff of Kalispell, and Doug and Denise of Gillette, Wyo.; grandchildren, Brendan and Liz, Andrea and Heath, Caitrin, Emmaand Shaun, Connor, Jennifer, Marcie and Ryan, Ashlee and Jesus, and Jamieson; and six great-grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 7 at St. Matthew Episcopal Church, 6800 Eastside Drive NE, Tacoma, Wash. Following the  service, it was Cal’s wish to have an informal, joyous celebration of life that will be held at the Auburn Golf Course and will take place shortly after the service.
