Golf: Mee falls on NAIA's Day 2
LINCOLN, Neb. — Carroll College junior Jackie Mee, a Libby grad, was in the hunt at the NAIA women’s golf national championship on Wednesday, until a disastrous back nine ended her round on a sour note at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club.
Mee played the front nine 3-over-par in her second round, and was at 8-over for the tournament, six shots back in a tie for 15th place before the bottom fell out of her round.
After the relatively strong trip out, Mee shot double bogey on the par-4 11th. She followed that two holes later with back-to-back bogeys before a par. She closed her round with a bogey on hole 16, triple bogey on 17 and double bogey on 18, to go 10-over-par on the back nine. She was 13-over for the round and fell back to a tie for 50th place at 18-over for the tournament.
Mee entered the day six strokes back in a tie for 25th. Tournament play concludes on Friday.
There were very few round under par on the day, with just one of 139 golfers carding a round at even par or better. Tournament leader Bri LaFoca of Northwood (Fla.) University shot 5-over to fall back to the pack and bring the entire field over par. Even current leader Daniela Martinez of Northwood (Texas) University, was 2-over for her round after an even par day to start. Only Alazne Urizar of Savannah (Ga.) College of Art and Design improved her score, needing an eagle on the par-5 18th to get to 1-under for the day.
The Frontier Conference is falling back to the pack as well, with Lewis-Clark State leading the way in a tie for 16th in the team standings. Rocky Mountain College is two strokes back in 19th place as a team. Rocky’s Kyla Clancy continues to lead the conference individually, shooting 5-over on Wednesday to jump eight spots in a tie for 12th, just seven shots back.
