Things worked out much differently this time for Kyle Mossfeldt of Whitefish and Sarah Moodee of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Mossfeldt closed with a 2-under 70 on the Championship 18 to win the 77th International Labor Day Tournament men’s championship on Monday at Buffalo Hill Golf Club.

Mossfeldt tied for second last year after winning his first Labor Day title in 2011.

He finished with an 8-under tournament total 202 for a 2-shot victory over Brad Grattan, of Whitefish, 63-71-70—204.

Moodee, also a runner-up last year, was a wire-to-wire winner to grab the women’s championship. She opened with a pair of 75s and closed with a 77 for a 227 total and a 4-shot victory.

Former champ Kali Gordon of Okotoks, Alberta, 76-76-79—231, was 4-shots back. Two-time defending champ Teigan Avery of Kalispell had to settle for third, 86-67-83—236.

Wendy Madison of Kalispell tied for fourth, 84-75-85—244.

“I don’t know how (I won it), but sometimes things happen,” Moodee said.

“This is the one tournament I play every year ... coming here, having fun and having no expectations. This is just an incredible place to be.”

Both champions were playing in the Labor Day event for the fourth time.

“I played well,” Mossfeldt said.

“I was 1-under for most of the round and got it to 2-under after 11.”

His first bogey was on the 13th hole, but he followed with birdies on 15 and 16.

“I was back to 3-under with two holes to go,” he said.

He had a double bogey on 17, but closed out his round with a birdie at 18.

“Off the tee, I hit it well,” he said of his final day.

“I was able to hit most of the greens.”

Mossfeldt was in the final foursome once again with Jeff Bishop of Vancouver, Wash.

“That makes it pretty comfortable,” he said.

Mossfeldt shared the opening-round lead with Brian Beach of Missoula, Cody Sherrill of Kalispell and Justin Dorr of Spokane, Wash. All shot 6-under 60s on the Cameron Nine.

Mossfeldt shot an even-par 72 on the Championship 18 on Sunday, which left him one-shot behind the leader — Bishop.

Bishop, 64-67-74—205 wound up third, one shot ahead of 14-year-old Ryggs Johnston of Libby, 63-70-73—206.

Sherrill, 60-73-75—208, was fifth.

Mossfeldt said the grounds crew at Buffalo Hill did a remarkable job having the course tournament ready.

“They did an amazing job getting the greens in the great condition they were in this weekend for the tournament,” he said.

Two-time defending men’s champion Logan Lindholm of Kalispell shot a 1-over total of 211.
