'Furious' drivers get citations

| April 12, 2015 10:00 PM

The Kalispell Police Department cited two drivers who had been racing down Fourth Avenue West. Apparently the motorists have taken the “Fast and Furious” movie franchise a little too seriously.

A concerned caller reported the wind had caused a traffic light to swing facing the wrong direction.

Another caller reported a large sign had blown into the roadway and was creating a hazard near the U.S. 93 Bypass and Old Reserve Road intersection. Officers removed the obstruction.

A woman living on Seventh Avenue West called to report someone had been stealing her mail. She said some of her mail, including her new passport, had been found by some kids near Ashley Creek. She said she thought the theft had been going on for months because bills and other items had failed to be delivered as expected.

The manager of a business on North Main Street called to report that a bunch of kids came into the parking lot, kicked the fence and broke it. The suspects fled before officers arrived.

A concerned caller reported that a pregnant neighbor was drinking while hosting a very loud party. Responding officers found no drinking was occurring, and the revelers agreed to quiet down.

A woman called police when an unknown person allegedly knocked at the door and window. The caller was frightened because she wasn’t expecting any company. Responding officers discovered the knocker was just a friend who had stopped by.

Several 911 hang-up calls came from the same number and location in quick succession. Dispatch determined the calls were being placed by a child playing with the phone. Officers were eventually able to speak to the “very tired mom and very energetic 3-year-old.” The mother promised to take care of it.

A caller on Fifth Avenue West reported to the Columbia Falls Police Department that someone had spray-painted obscenities on the side of a trailer.

A caller reported a loud party taking place in an apartment on Seventh Street West. The upstairs neighbors were allegedly all about the bass.

A woman called the Whitefish Police Department to report a purse that was either lost or just misplaced. She decided to call back if she couldn’t find it later.

A caller reported a vehicle parked in a handicap spot on Central Avenue without the proper handicap decal or plate. Officers checked into it and found that the car did, in fact, have the proper sticker displayed.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious man lurking around in a movie theater. The man was located at the scene and escorted from the property.

The windy weather caused several issues across the valley with power lines over the weekend. The Smith Valley Fire Department, Marion Fire Department, Bigfork Fire Department and South Kalispell Fire Department all responded to calls involving power lines.

The wind also may have been partly responsible for grass fire calls to the West Valley Fire Department and Columbia Falls Fire Department.
