Track & Field: Northwest strong at Top 10 meet
MISSOULA — Three Glacier athletes took home individual titles at the Rich Pilcher Top 10 Meet in Missoula on Tuesday, highlighted by Annie Hill’s victory in the 1600-meter run.
Hill, a freshman, won the mile-long race in 4:51.35. The current girls MHSA all-class record is 4:48.24 set by Chiara Warner of Townsend in 2013.
She then anchored the Wolfpack’s 1600-meter relay team which finished second.
“(Annie) ran (the mile) all by herself again,” Glacier coach Jim Boschee said. “Then she came into the mile relay with a 57 second split with an hour recovery time. For her to come back like that, she felt pretty good.”
The Valkyries, anchored by Bryn Morley who won the 800-meter run, crossed the finish line in 4:03.16, edging the Wolfpack (4:04.23) for the title.
“Bryn and Annie ran fourth in the relay. We were behind Bigfork by about 15 meters and 15 meters is all Morley needs to keep her distance,” Boschee said.
Hill was joined at the top of the podium by teammates Keyawna Larson and Austin Cook.
Larson won the javelin title with ease. Her mark of 141-11 was over 10 feet past runner-up Carley Conheeder of Plains.
Cook, the lone champion for the Wolfpack boys, earned a first-place finish in the long jump. His 21-foot jump outgained Missoula Sentinel’s Nolan Staats by two inches.
Harrison Kauffman (discus), Brock Sandry (1600-meter run) and Aaron Robinson (110-hurdles) finished second in their respective events for Glacier. Kauffman added a third place finish in the shot put.
“On the boys side, Harrison Kauffman had two huge performances in those two events,” Boschee said.
“The 12 girls and 14 boys that were here can come back and bring their experience to the rest of the team. Just seeing what’s out there in all the classes is going to pay off for them.”
Logan Morley, Bryn’s brother won the boys 3200-meter run in 9:34.74.
Columbia Falls had two individual winners. Carla Nicosia won the triple jump by leaping 36-4.5 feet. Teammate Samantha Mundel won the 3200-meter run in 11:33.69.
Whitefish’s Jed Nagler, who finished second in the boys 100-meter dash, won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 5 inches. He beat Bigfork’s Josh Sandry (6-3) by two inches.
