Libby's Johnston 3rd at Big I National golf

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Ryggs Johnston, who topped the leaderboard for the middle two rounds, came up short on the final day of the 47th annual Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship golf tournament at Prairie Dunes Country Club.

Johnston struggled with a 9-over-par 79 on the final day, Thursday, for a 288 total for 72 holes and a third-place finish.

The Libby freshman finished three shots off the pace.

Wells Padgett of Wichita, Kansas, closed with a 5-over 75 to finish at 285 to claim the victory.

Riley Griffin of Providence, Rhode Island, shot 73 on Thursday. He was second with a 286 score.

Johnston had six bogeys, two doubles and just one birdie for the final 18 holes.

He opened tournament play on Monday with a 72 and followed with a 67 and 70.

Johnston led the field by a single shot after 36 and 54 holes.
