Ukulele player causes concern

There was a man straddling the center line on U.S. 2 near Kalispell, and he was armed with a ukulele. A witness told the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office that this was odd, simply because “nobody does that.”

Residents at Swamp View Lane suspected a trespasser on the property. Cameras were set up and captured pictures of an intruder, but none of the photos were clear.

A man who was selling his Pheasant Road home thought it was suspicious when someone walked up and tried to open the door. It was locked, and the suspect walked away.

Someone called to report two people who were reportedly acting suspicious near Sunset Drive. The caller said one of them was scratching his skin with a broken golf club.

A U.S. 93 business called to report an “unruly client.” The man apparently became aggressive when he didn’t get prompt service. The requested employee was caught up in emergency business. The customer later apologized.

A car owner noticed some glass and a small hole on the vehicle on U.S. 2. She believed that someone shot it with a gun, though she didn’t hear a gunshot or see anything suspicious.

A canoe washed up to shore near Middle Pierce Lane, but nobody appeared to be nearby or in trouble.

A Bear Trail resident felt someone tried to break into her basement. She didn’t want to file a criminal complaint.

There was a complaint of a man on a bicycle who was running a dog along Holt Drive. The caller felt the same man had led previous dogs to death by running them in the heat.

An unaccompanied minor who got on a train out-of-state stepped off for a while in Whitefish. He wasn’t being let back on the train, according to the boy’s father. It had to do with Montana rules for minors at the train station, and deputies helped sort it out.

A deputy stopped five kids along Trumble Creek Road who appeared to be hiding. Two of them admitted to smoking marijuana. There was no contraband in their possession and the youngsters were released to their parents.


An elderly woman called to thank a Kalispell Police Department officer for stopping to tie her shoes one day so that they wouldn’t get caught in her walker.


The Whitefish Police Department received a complaint about a man standing at a U.S. 93 corner and shouting about religion. He was apparently reading the Bible aloud.

A bear reportedly knocked over a trash can near East Lakeshore Drive and was rifling through it. A “whole bunch” of people were around taking pictures of the animal.

One complaint was of a vehicle parked on East Second Street with a dog inside and the windows barely cracked. An investigation revealed that there was no dog inside the vehicle.

A semi-truck received a citation for parking in a handicap spot near East Second Street.

One caller complained about a neighbor whose hot tub was fueled by burning wood. That same conversation pivoted to the apparent theft of a cellphone that happened a year ago.


A woman trespassed on a Ninth Street West property twice — first on a bicycle and later in a vehicle, according to a report to the Columbia Falls Police Department.

Some young people were talking loudly near an Eighth Avenue East North resident’s window. An officer advised them to keep it down.
