Golf: Whitefish's Walp, Schulz win host meet
WHITEFISH — Whitefish senior Coral Schulz opened her defense of the Class A state championship with a win at the Whitefish Invitational on Wednesday afternoon at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
Schulz shot a four-over-par 76 on her home course to finish three shots ahead of her teammate, Katie Fyall.
Whitefish’s Joey Walp made it a sweep for the Bulldogs on the boys’ side, earning the victory with a round of 3-over-par 75.
Walp bested Polson’s Carson McDaniel and Hamilton’s Max Toenies who each carded a 78. Walp’s teammate, Brenden Bulls, joined him in the top 10 with a sixth-place finish after a round of 86.
Polson had three boys in the top 10 as Matt Hobbs (seventh) and Hogan Kelley (10th) joined McDaniel. The Pirates’ top finisher in the girl’s event was Kiyara McCue in 11th.
Gabe Love of Columbia Falls shot the best round of the day by a Wildcats golfer, shooting an 88 to tie Hobbs for seventh.
No team scores were recorded at the meet. Hamilton placed three golfers in the top five on the boy’s side and had the third place finisher, Sydni Rose, in the girl’s event.
