Mann, Schulz win smoke-shortened Missoula Invitational

MISSOULA — Not long after players fanned out across Larchmont Golf Course, teed up their first ball of the day and sent it toward the fairway, word was starting to spread around the course.

Their day — and the Missoula Invitational golf tournament — was over.

Just minutes after play began Tuesday, officials in Missoula made the decision to cancel the final round of the tournament because of poor air quality. As concerns about dangerous, smoky conditions mount throughout the region, readings in Missoula Tuesday morning had particulate concentration in the “unhealthy” range.

No scores were recorded Tuesday, leaving round one leaders Tom Mann (Glacier) and Coral Schulz (Whitefish) as the individual medalists. Schulz’s teammate Katie Fyall was second to help the Bulldog girls claim the team title by a more than 30-stroke margin.

For Schulz, the event win is her second straight to start the season. The defending Class A state champion, Schulz was the only girl to break 80 in Monday’s round, which was held at Canyon River Golf Course. Schulz finished with a two-over-par 74, seven strokes better than Fyall and 11 shots clear of third-place finisher Sydni Rose of Hamilton.

Whitefish’s Hailey Hileman carded an 88 to finish in sixth place. The Bulldogs dominated the field, out-pacing Glacier by 32 strokes.

“That Whitefish team is going to be really hard to beat on the (Class) A level,” Glacier head coach Jim Schaible said. “But we played well and we’re going to be in the mix at Class AA come the state tournament.”

Glacier’s McKenna Tinseth and Kyersten Sieben tied for seventh with matching 90s. The Wolfpack finished in second place despite the absence of two-time defending Class AA state champion Teigan Avery who did not compete.

On the boys side, Mann carded a 70 (-2) to finish two shots ahead of Sentinel’s Sam Ramsbacher and Hellgate’s Isak Nord.

“(Mann) played really solid,” Schaible said. “On that course, some of those pins were really tough to get at but he putted well. He has been really solid and matured a lot for us this year.”

Sentinel won the boys title with a team score of 301, besting Helena and Flathead who tied for second at 317. The Braves’ Evan Files and Rielly Manger tied for ninth at five-over-par 77.
