Cats, Dogs lead at NW Volleyball Tourney

DILLON — Columbia Falls and Whitefish finished as the top seeds for the Northwest at the Northwest/Southwest Tip-Off volleyball tournament on Saturday.

Columbia Falls cruised to an 8-2 mark in pool play, which tied it with Butte Central and Corvallis from the Southwest for the best overall record at the two-day event.

Whitefish was second with a 4-6 mark.

In seed play, Corvallis defeated Columbia Falls 16-25, 25-23, 15-8 in a matchup of top seeds.

In the battle of No. 2 seeds, Butte Central stopped Whitefish 25-18, 25-20.

“Butte Central beat us in two, tight, hard-fought games,” Whitefish coach Jackie Fuller said.

“Overall it was a good weekend for the Bulldogs. As a team we grew stronger together. I saw some really nice play from my defensive specialist and I felt my setters did a nice job running the offense.”

GREAT FALLS — Flathead opened the Class AA season with a strong showing.

The Bravettes defeated Great Falls High 25-8, 25-5, 25-16 and C.M. Russell 25-21, 26-16, 25-7 in nonconference play.

Tiana Johnson led FHS in kills — six —versus Great Falls and totaled 10 against CMR.

Abbie O’Brien had four aces and seven digs against Great Falls.

Lizzie Sherwood had 23 digs in the CMR match.

Flathead’s next action is Sept. 10 against Billings West at CMR.

GREAT FALLS — Glacier took care of business in impressive fashion to open the Class AA season.

The Wolfpack stopped Great Falls High 25-16, 18-25, 25-20, 25-16 and then dumped C.M. Russell 25-10, 25-13, 25-15.

Both outings were nonconference.

Abigail Friske had 19 of Glacier’s 35 kills versus Great Falls High.

Hailee Bennett led in aces, five, and digs, 25, for the Wolfpack.

Nikke Krueger had 13 kills and three blocks in the victory over CMR.

Glacier is back in action Thursday in Idaho, facing Sandpoint and Post Falls at Post Falls.

On Saturday the Wolfpack open Western AA play at Missoula Hellgate.
