HOT OFF THE PRESS: Book links 1915, 2015 in Glacier Park

Flathead Valley Community College will welcome local author and Hungry Horse News Editor Chris Peterson for a community presentation Dec. 16 on Mary Roberts Rinehart’s book, “Through Glacier Park in 1915.”

Penned by Rinehart in 1915, “Through Glacier Park in 1915” was a travelogue of her 300-mile journey, led by Howard Eaton, through Glacier National Park, starting and ending in East Glacier at the train station. Rinehart traveled by horseback through the park with a party of more than 40 people, including famed artist Charlie Russell.

In 2015, 100 years after the release of the book, Peterson re-created Rinehart’s journey.

Between February and September, Peterson hiked 240 miles, many of them with his son, while confronting snowstorms, rain, hurricane-force winds, blazing heat, bear encounters and the thick smoke of wildfires.

Peterson produced a book, “Through Glacier Park 1915-2015: A Centennial Celebration of a Classic Journey,” chronicling his adventure on the trail of Rinehart.

Peterson’s free presentation Dec. 16, which is hosted by the Glacier National Park Conservancy,  will feature stories from his adventures. Autographed copies of Peterson’s book will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Conservancy.
