SWIMMING: Glacier speeds in Butte

BUTTE — Glacier freshman AJ Popp continues to set records in her debut season, setting two more school records in another fantastic performance for the Wolfpack at the Butte Invitational swim meet on Saturday.

Popp won the 200-yard freestyle and finished second in the 500 freestyle to set new school records in each. Last week in the Kalispell Invitational, she set the school records for the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. She now owns five of the school’s eight individual records after just two prep meets.

“She’s swimming well,” Glacier/Flathead swim coach David Lillard said.

“Even if she doesn’t get a best time, she has enough skill and speed to set a new record. She’s working really hard in practice and she’s going to be a great state competitor.”

Wolfpack teammate Olivia Gibson also finished in the top five in the 200 freestyle and the Glacier girls won the 200 freestyle relay. The relay team nearly set the school record.

Swimming for the Glacier boys, Nate Burnham matched his personal-best time as he finished second in the 200 free.

Anthony Clason finished second in both the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

For Flathead, Madison Edwards dropped her personal best time in the 200 freestyle and Darby Mackenstadt and Madison Lovett posted bests in the 100 free. Jordan Buxton set a best in the 50 free and Maggi Mulcahy in the 100 backstroke.

“Those are all returners who have been working hard and getting back in shape,” Lillard said. “They were excited to race today.

“In general, we’re really proud of our new swimmers. It takes a lot of courage to step up in front of peers who have been swimming since they were little kids. They’ve learned a lot over the week and were able to apply that at the meet.

“Our returning swimmers are working hard, getting in shape. They’re seeing some of the results of that already.”
