WRESTLING: Flathead grapplers 5th at Mining City Duals

BUTTE — Flathead finished fifth at the Mining City Duals wrestling tournament on Saturday.

The Braves, which entered the competition with a 5-0 dual mark, went 2-1 both Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Flathead beat Polson 52-18 and Conrad 72-3, but lost to Missoula Sentinel 42-21.

On Saturday, Flathead beat Helena Capital 48-14 and Billings Senior 36-35 and lost to Havre 42-27.

“A great weekend for us,” Flathead coach Rich Vasquez said.

“After this one, I think we’re one of the top two or three teams in AA.”

Sophomore Trae Vasquez, the defending state champion at 112, won all six of his matches at the Duals to improve to 11-0 on the season. Vasquez is currently wrestling at 126.

Hunter Rush (103), Cody DeVall (113), Anthony Wright (170) and Logan Wilson (182) were all 5-1 in mat action in Butte.

“I’m happy with where we are at,” coach Vasquez said.

“I think we should be pushing for a state championship this year.”

Columbia Falls and Glacier also competed in Butte.

Flathead will compete in the C.M. Russell Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday in Great Falls.
