Glacier girls break swim record in 400 free relay

GREAT FALLS — For the third straight outing, it was a record-setting day for the Glacier girls in swimming.

The foursome of Olivia Gibson, Bailey Smith, Emma Hornby and AJ Popp set a new school standard in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:51.39 on Saturday at the Great Falls Invitational. The old mark of 3:52.01 was set last year at state.

“AJ and the girl from Bozeman were racing neck-and-neck,” Glacier swim coach David Lillard said.

“AJ pulled ahead and won by half a second.”

Popp swam the final leg.

This meet featured no individual events, just relays.

“It was fun, a team-building event,” Lillard, who also coaches the Flathead swim team, said.

“So it was hard to gauge individual performances.”

Glacier placed second in the mixed 200 medley relay, which featured Popp, Anthony Clason, Gibson and Nathan Burnham.

Team wise, Glacier was fifth in combined (boys and girls) scoring. Columbia Falls finished seventh.

The Glacier girls were third. The Columbia Falls boys were fourth.

Columbia Falls edged Bozeman with a time of 1:49.49 to win the 200 butterfly relay.

This was the final meet before the holidays for Flathead and Glacier. The season resumes Jan. 6 at Missoula.
