Local kids make waves in state swim finals

MISSOULA — Flathead and Glacier wrapped up a season of best times and school records by adding to those achievements at the All-Class State Swim Meet over the weekend at the University of Montana Grizzly Pool.

Glacier freshman James Bouda was a runner-up in the 50 freestyle (22.86) and 100 backstroke (55.70) on Saturday, the final day.

Teammate Olivia Gibson finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:36.67) finals.

Columbia Falls standout Colton Babcock put the finishing touches on the Wildcats inaugural season by placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.40) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:57.14).

Two Glacier school relay marks were set during the finals. In the 200 freestyle, Gibson, Lauren Harmon, Jessica Loyda and Emma Hornby placed third with a time of 1:45.13.

Loyda, Hornby, Bailey Smith and Gibson set a new school standard in the 400 freestyle relay. They were fourth in 3:52.01.

Glacier’s Nate Burnham, a sophomore, broke his own school record in the 500 freestyle in the consolation finals for the second time in two days and the fourth time this year.

During Friday’s preliminary session, Flathead swimmers posted 25 best times to 29 for Glacier.

“Incredible amount of best times,” Flathead/Glacier swim coach Dave Lillard said. “A lot of swimmers started their races really fast and it takes a lot of courage to do that. I was proud to see them try that.”

Lillard said Ethan Timm, a junior, became the first Flathead swimmer to compete on championship Saturday in at least three years. He made the consolation finals in the 100 breaststroke.
