Basketball roundup: Broncs nip Bulldogs, 64-61

FRENCHTOWN — Bridger Truett hit a 3-point field goal just inside the half-court line with just over a second to play to give Frenchtown a wild 64-61 Northwestern A boys basketball victory over Whitefish on Saturday.

Whitefish’s Cody Olson tied the game earlier at 61-all by sinking one of two free throws with four seconds remaining.

Whitefish (0-5 overall, 0-2 league) bolted to a 20-8 advantage in the opening quarter before Frenchtown (4-1, 1-1) regrouped.

Truett, a 6-foot-5 senior, ignited the Broncs’ rally with his 36-point, 10-rebound performance. He scored 22 points in the final half.

Austin Means added 15 for the Broncs.

Olson paced Whitefish with 14 points. Cody Ross followed with 11 and Jack Streibich had 10.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Behind Ty Morgan’s 23 points and a Grant Stenger double-double, the Wildcats stormed to a 45-point Northwest A victory over Libby.

Stenger tallied 10 points while grabbing 12 boards.

The Wildcats (6-1, 2-0) outrebounded the Loggers 41-23.

Libby (0-5, 0-2) was led by Erik Lauer’s team-high nine points.

POLSON — Cedric Earthboy hit a last-second shot to lead Class B Ronan to an overtime victory over Lake County rival Class A Polson in a nonconference game.

Earthboy and teammate Jeremiah North Piegan each finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Chiefs to victory.

Matthew Rensvold had 17 points to lead Polson and Tanner Wilson had 14.

EUREKA — Eureka held off a late charge by Plains to pick up the District 7B victory.

Eureka (2-4, 1-1) led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter before Plains roared back.

Chase Bohne led Eureka in scoring with 24 points. Trey Bohne was next with 15.

WHITEFISH — Brooke Yarnall scored 14 points and Alivia Williams 10 to push Frenchtown past Whitefish in Northwestern A play.

Williams also pulled down eight rebounds.

Dani Douglas and Cailyn Ross shared scoring honors for Whitefish with eight points each.

Anna Peterson led the Bulldogs in rebounding with five.

Nearly a third of Frenchtown’s scoring was done at the free-throw line, where the Broncs hit 20 of 33 attempts.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Ten Wildkats scored in a Northwestern A drubbing of Libby.

Columbia Falls (7-0, 2-0) led by two after the first quarter, but held Libby to just nine points for the rest of the contest.

Ciera Finberg led Columbia Falls, and all scorers, with 14 points while younger sister Cydney Finberg added 13 points and four assists.

Libby (3-3, 1-1) had seven-point efforts from both Hailey Craig and Devon Gallagher.
