Idaho quake triggers rock slides

CHALLIS, Idaho (AP) — A 4.9 magnitude earthquake in a remote Idaho county triggered rock slides that blocked some road lanes Saturday but did not cause any major damage or injuries. 

The quake followed a 3.7-magnitude temblor that also occurred near the Custer County area on Dec. 22 and numerous smaller recent quakes.

The earthquake was recorded at 10:44 a.m. Saturday and was centered about 4 miles east of Challis, a small town of about 1,000 in the center of the state surrounded by U.S. National Forest land.

The Missoulian reported that rumblings were felt in southwestern Montana’s Bitterroot Valley.
