Although the Glacier Wolfpack never trailed in their nonconference matchup against the Polson Pirates, they needed clutch free throws down the stretch to hold on for a 57-52 home victory on Tuesday night.

“We keep getting better in different areas each game and this game was managing the clock, getting to the free-throw line and hitting some free throws to win the game,” Glacier head coach Mark Harkins said.

“Sometimes you need to learn how to win when things don’t go your way. Polson hung around all game it was just a close game all night long.”

Polson (2-4) trailed by one after the opening quarter, but Glacier’s second straight 16-point period took the Wolfpack into the break with a 32-26 lead.

The Pirates finally outscored Glacier 14-12 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

Glacier, aided by Jaxen Hashley’s game-high 12 points, was 6 for 11 from behind the arc where Taden Gilman shot 2 for 3 and finished with eight points.  Like Hashley, Sam McCamley also reached double figures, scoring 10 points in the victory. He hit two 3-pointers and was a perfect 2 for 2 from the charity stripe.

“They played hard. I didn’t think we executed as well as we have on either side of the floor, but their effort was phenomenal,” Harkins said.

Polson was led by Peyton Lefthand and Derek Peel who each netted nine points. Peel scored all of his points from the three-point line, finishing 3 for 4 from behind the arc. Andrew Curley added eight points.

The Wolfpack travels to Missoula Big Sky on Saturday for a 4:15 p.m. tip-off.

Polson hosts conference foe Columbia Falls on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
