| January 20, 2015 4:21 PM

Elmer Andrew Wiedmeier, 92, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015, in Bountiful, Utah.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1922, in Loyalton, South Dakota, to Martin J. Wiedmeier and Paulina Mantek.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Adaline Wiedmeier, William J. Wiedmeier, Reuben A. Wiedmeier and Violet Wiedmeier Hasvold.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Selma Stenquist Wiedmeier; and his four children, Randy D. Wiedmeier, Susan E. Wiedmeier, Val D. Wiedmeier and Lezlie A. Wiedmeier Atwood. He was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was married to Selma Stenquist on Aug. 25, 1958, in Pocatello, Idaho, and their marriage was sealed in the Cardston, Alberta, Temple on March 18, 1967.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. During his service in the Navy, his ship, the Jose Navarro, was sunk by a German U-boat. He spent six days in the Indian Ocean before he was rescued by the British Navy.

He spent most of his life working as a heavy diesel mechanic in both the oil fields and road construction. His talents working with machinery often lead him to develop new tools needed in his profession.

He was active his entire life in service to others, and he was often heard saying, “I have never met a stranger.” Elmer could start up a conversation with anyone at any time. He spent many years in the Boy Scouts of America as a leader to many youth. Many of these youth looked to Elmer as a role model and guide through life. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; frequently giving service to anyone he found needing help.

Elmer’s positive attitude was very contagious. He often spoke of the many blessings in his life and gave thanks to his heavenly Father for those blessings.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel in Bigfork. A viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery.
