Old Sap writes his songs based on the “crazy world in my head.” He said anything and everything can serve as inspiration for a lyric or a melody.

His background in poetry and spoken word help him to create music as well. He said he’s carried a notebook in his pocket everywhere since he was about 14, and will frequently jot down things that he sees or experiences that can later be used as inspiration for his craft.

His love of poetry — which is also the inspiration behind his stage name — is his primary vehicle.

“That way of looking at the world really informs everything I do,” he said.

Musically speaking, Old Sap is drawn primarily to indie folk music of the last decade. He especially enjoys the Avett Brothers, Bon Iver, John Prine and Sufjan Stevens. Pink Floyd has also influenced and inspired him through the years.

This event will be the first time Old Sap will be competing as a singer and songwriter. He has experience on stage previously in spoken word and poetry.

“I’m excited about the Showdown,” Old Sap said. “It’s a night all about singers and songwriters, and what a neat opportunity that is to be part of it.

“I admire so many local musicians, and this will be a great showcase of the local talent.”

Old Sap hopes to continue to perform live shows locally in 2015, but wants to really focus on recording his first album.

“There’s vision there,” he said.
