Flathead, Glacier swimmers shave times, set records

MISSOULA — The Flathead and Glacier high school swim teams continue to shave time, set school records and win events. That happened again Saturday at the Missoula Invitational.

Flathead swimmers notched 36 best times to Glacier’s 26.

Nate Burnham for the second time this season set a new Glacier school record in the 500 freestyle (5:08.59) and Glacier’s 200 freestyle relay team of Jessica Loyda, Lauren Harmon, Emma Hornby and Olivia Gibson broke the school record by a second with a second-place finish (1:47.09).

Glacier’s James Bouda won the 50 freestyle with a personal-best time, 23.00.

“An awesome meet,” Flathead/Glacier coach Dave Lilliard said.

“We’re still working really hard (in practice). That’s incredible (the swimmers continued to post best times). They are tenacious and not willing to give up.”

At a meet back on Jan. 10 in Kalispell, Flathead had 32 season-best times and Glacier 25.

Burnham broke the school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:12.35 at that meet.

On Saturday for Glacier, Bailey Smith and Carley Denton turned in best times in the 500 freestyle.

Gibson also had a best time in the 50 freestyle.

Meg Hornby, 100 breaststroke, and Jackie Stenberg, 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle, had best times in their events.

For Flathead, Maggie Mulcahy had a best time in the 500 freestyle.

Delanie Eliason, Maddie Huestis, Luke Barron and Joe Zanni all had best times in the 200 freestyle.

In the 100 breaststroke, best times were logged by Jordan Buxton and Ethan Timm.

Sara Jensen and Dani Skonord also had 100 breaststroke best times.

Colton Babcock of Columbia Falls was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.91) and 100 butterfly (54.73).

On the team front, the Glacier girls had the best showing, finishing fourth.

Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Glacier, Flathead and Whitefish are back in the pool on Saturday at the Helena Invitational. The State Meet follows Feb. 13-14 in Missoula.
