Basketball roundup: Ronan tips Corvallis in OT

RONAN — Rhett Duffey hit a 3 with 2.3 seconds left to force overtime and Colton McCrea sank 1 of 2 free throws with 1.4 seconds left in the extra session to give Ronan a thrilling 55-54 nonconference boys basketball victory over Corvallis on Friday.

Corvallis tied it at 54-all with 2.3 seconds left in overtime when Jayce Gilder, who was fouled on a 3-point attempt, sank all three free throws.

Ronan never trailed in overtime.

Gilder led the Blue Devils in scoring with 22 points.

Duffey finished with nine points and McCrea had seven.

Cedric Earthboy’s 12 points paced Ronan (6-7 overall).

FRENCHTOWN — Frenchtown’s Bridger Truett scored nine of his game-high 27 points in overtime as the Broncs beat Polson in a Northwestern A contest.

Polson’s Andrew Curley hit a 3 with four seconds left in regulation to force the extra session.

TROY — Troy swept the season series with Lincoln County rival Libby, downing the Loggers in nonconference basketball action.

Troy (5-7 overall) led 28-16 at the half.

Libby closed to within three points of Troy in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer.

Sean Opland had a strong outing for Troy, knocking down 18 points, nabbing nine rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Gage Tallmadge added 15 points for the Trojans.

Libby’s Jonny Cielak led all scorers with 20 points. Colin Johnson tossed in 13 for the Loggers.

Troy won the first meeting on Jan. 8 in Libby, 49-40.

TROY — A fast start by Troy didn’t hold up as Libby battled back to claim the nonconference victory over its Lincoln County rival.

Troy went on top 12-8 in the opening quarter, but trailed 17-14 at the half and 28-24 heading into the final quarter.

Libby also won the first matchup with the Trojans on Jan. 8 in Libby, 40-23.

Shannon Reny led Libby’s offense with 11 points. Shyla Stevenson had 10 points.

Allie Coldwell scored 19 points for Troy.

POLSON — Lacey Hochhalter tallied 14 points and Alivia Williams 12 to push Frenchtown past Polson in a Northwestern A matchup.

Polson, which struggled to score just seven points through three quarters, exploded for 18 in the final eight minutes.

Nicole Lake, Brenna Clarke and MaKenna Weltz had five points each for Polson.
