Saturday not only marks our country’s birthday but also the 100th birthday of an iconic Glacier National Park edifice, the Many Glacier Hotel.

The majestic hotel on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake opened for visitors on July 4, 1915 (although it really wasn’t completed until three years later).

The dream of Louis W. Hill, Many Glacier Hotel has entertained and enthralled thousands of visitors over the past century. The hotel is famous for its views, its unique and compelling architecture and its location as the centerpoint of a host of hiking and recreation opportunities.

It’s a throwback to an earlier time of rustic luxury that still is a popular lodging place today.

Over the years, Many Glacier has been known for everything from peculiar Chinese lanterns adorning the massive lobby to musical entertainment, particularly hootenanny nights.

The musical tradition has been resurrected at Many Glacier (the Chinese lanterns are long gone) and the historic hotel continues to be a focal point for the northeast corner of Glacier Park.

A low-key birthday party will unfold on Saturday including walking tours, historic talks and, of course, a hootenanny.

Happy birthday to one of Glacier Park’s gems.

Fourth of July fun

It may seem that this Fourth of July will be lacking because of fireworks prohibitions, but holiday revelers should note that there still is plenty to do to celebrate Independence Day.

The fireworks ban imposed Thursday is more extensive than expected and has led to cancellation of all major community displays in Flathead County.

But there’s more to the Fourth than fireworks.

If you’re interested in a parade, go to Kalispell or Bigfork on Saturday (or take a longer drive to Polebridge for a different patriotic parade experience).

There’s fun to be had at Lakeside (a boat parade and concert, among other activities), Kalispell (an ice cream social at the Conrad Mansion) and Whitefish (for the annual Whitefish Arts Festival).

Everywhere from the Yaak to Polson, there are plenty of opportunities to join in holiday happenings.
