Golf: Fourth field goes low
WHITEFISH — Former tour professional Bob Conrad, of Yarrow Point, Washington, shot a 7-under-par 65 and University of Montana freshman Sadie Crippen shot an even-par 72 to take the lead in the opening round of the 79th annual Earl Hunt Memorial Fourth of July golf tournament on Thursday at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
Conrad’s round was two strokes better than Seattle’s Cory Mehl who is 5-under-par after a 67.
Kalispell’s Logan Lindholm is in a tie for third three strokes back. Whitefish’s Mark Mance and Kalispell’s Ryan Porch are a little further back in a tie for eighth at 1-under par. There are 13 golfers stuck in a logjam for 14th at 1-over, including Whitefish’s Ryan Swagar and Reed Platke, Kalispell’s Logan and Larry Iverson and Libby’s Ryggs Johnston.
Crippen leads by one stroke in the women’s draw, ahead of Bobcat junior Haylee Folkvord of Bozeman, who shot an opening round 73.
The rest of the pack is at least four strokes back, including Crippen’s older sister Maggie, in a group of three golfers tied for third place at 77.
Whitefish High School senior Coral Schulz, the Class A state champion, is in a tie for sixth at 78.
Play resumes today and concludes on Saturday.
