WHITEFISH — While each entered the day in close heats at the top of the leaderboard, by the close of play on Saturday at the 79th annual Earl Hunt Memorial Fourth of July golf tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club there wasn’t any chance for a playoff.

Bob Conrad of Yarrow Point, Washington, outshot Kalispell’s Logan Lindholm by nine strokes and Helena’s Darah Newell came from a stroke back to beat Friday’s leader by 11 strokes, each pulling away from the pack for a comfortable cushion entering the final holes.

Conrad, who played in the tournament for his first time this weekend, shot a final round 6-under-par 66 to card a three round total of 14-under-par 202 (65-71-66—202), winning by nine strokes.

“The course was playing great,” Conrad said. “I played pretty steady, made some putts and kept it in play and just was patient out there.”

Kalispell’s Logan Lindholm struggled in the final round, shooting a 3-over 75 on Saturday after a pair of 68s to start the tournament. Libby’s Ryggs Johnston, who will be a freshman at Libby High this fall, tied for third at 4-under 212 with Seattle’s Cory Mehl. Hamilton’s Craig Hurlbert was fifth at even-par 216.

Newell, who won the Fourth tournament in 2010, rallied from a stroke down to shoot the second lowest score of the day, scoring a 76 in the final round (77-72-76—225) to win by six strokes over Missoula’s Lindsay Reeve (79-75-77—231).

“I just played shot by shot and if I made a mistake tried to just relax and focus on the next shot,” Newell said. “I ended up doing pretty well.”

Missoula’s Sadie Crippen, a freshman for the Griz golf team, finished third at 233. Bozeman’s Lauren Hausauer, a junior on the Montana State team, shot 234 to finish tied for fourth with Crippen’s older sister, Maggie Crippen, a sophomore at North Dakota State.

Bozeman’s Haylee Folvord, who entered the final round with the lead, shot an 87 to finish tied for sixth with Whitefish’s Coral Schulz at 235.
