CALGARY, Alberta — West Glacier bull rider Beau Hill rode Indian Turtle for 84.5 points to place fifth in Pool B after his first day of competition at the Calgary Stampede rodeo on Tuesday.

Two-time Calgary Stampede champion and 2013 PBR world champion J.B. Mauney leads the pool, riding Radioactive for 89.5 points. Guilherme Marchi is in second with an 87-point ride of Rival Son, while Sage Kimzey and Wesley Silcox are tied for third at 85.5. Ty Pozzobon, who was a late addition to the event, is in sixth after a ride of 83.5.

Competition in Pool B runs through Friday. The top competitors from the pool will face the best of Pool A, which concluded Monday, in the $100,000 Showdown Sunday.

Saskatchewan’s Tanner Byrne won Pool A, pointing a ride in each of his last three performances in the opening group. Former Stampede and PBR world champion Mike Lee was second and Saskatchewan riders Aaron Roy and Dakota Buttar, the defending Canadian Pro Rodeo bull riding champion, also advanced to Sunday.

Hill, 36, is no stranger to success at the Stampede, finishing second in the event in 2010.
