ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — Kalispell cowgirl Heidi Schmid placed 24th in the pole bending competition on Tuesday at the National High School Finals Rodeo, finishing in 26.319 seconds.

The round leader finished in 20.275 seconds. Schmid is 110th place for the first round, trailing the overall leader, who finished in 19.624, the only rider to go sub-20 seconds.

Schmid, a senior at Flathead High School, and her horse Joe will have a second attempt on Thursday morning.

St. Ignatius’ Will Powell and partner Caleb Guardipee of Cut Bank still lead the first go of team roping, marking a time of 5.88 seconds to remain ahead of a Texas duo by .1 second after Tuesday’s fourth performance.

Powell is tied for ninth in the all-around cowboy standings with 200 points, 90 points behind the leader, Mississippi’s Marcus Theriot.

None of the four northwest Montana competitors at the rodeo are scheduled to compete in today’s performances.
