POLSON — In the Class A ranks of American Legion Baseball, postseason play starts today as eight teams in Montana’s Western A District converge on Polson for a chance to play for a state title.

One team in the field has already secured their spot at the state tournament.

The Kalispell Lakers A squad is hosting the 2015 state tournament on July 30 to August 3. Since host teams get an automatic bid, one less team out of the Western A District will have a chance to continue its season.

The tournament kicks off with a matchup between the Bitterroot Bucs and Libby Loggers at 9 a.m. The Bucs swept the Loggers in the first conference doubleheader of the season, winning 9-6 and 5-2 back in May.

At noon, the defending Montana Class A state champion Glacier Twins face the Kootenai Valley Rangers. The teams last met on June 23, when the Twins swept the Rangers in a double header, 13-5 and 7-1.

The Lakers take on the Bitterroot Red Sox at 3 p.m. The Red Sox most recent matchup with the Lakers was a two-game sweep on June 23. Bitterroot won 12-1 and 15-5.

The first day concludes with a 6 p.m. contest between the Missoula Mavericks and the host Mission Valley Mariners. On June 30, the Mariners won a pair of one-run contests to sweep the Mavs, 7-6 and 2-1.

Tournament play continues through the weekend with the championship game scheduled for noon on Sunday. There is a second championship game scheduled for Monday if the consolation bracket winner takes down the undefeated winner in the first title match.
