Western A District Legion baseball tournament: Lakers fall, Twins romp in openers

POLSON — Despite hitting two doubles, the Kalispell Lakers couldn’t push a run across the plate in their 7-0 loss to the Bitterroot Red Sox in the first round of the Western A District American Legion baseball tournament on Thursday.

Torin Bowden and Dawson Smith recorded the extra-base hits, but Kalispell was shut down by Bitteroot pitchers Ladd Grenfell and Hunter Omlid.

Bowden finished 2 for 4 while Gunnar Marsh, Haydn Schlepp and Smith also had hits for the Lakers.

Kalispell will take on Mission Valley at noon today in loser-out play.

POLSON — The defending Class A state champion Glacier Twins disposed of their opening-round foe, the Kootenai Valley Rangers, in seven innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

The Twins led by four in the bottom of the third and plated six runs in the sixth for the final tally.

Vinny Smith, who went 2 for 4 at the plate hit a home run, and teammate Jayce Fagerland finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

The Twins take on the Bitterroot Bucs today at 3 p.m.

POLSON — A six-run rally in the top of the fourth inning put Libby in front and knocked starting pitcher Dylan Gavlak out of the game, but the Bitterroot Bucs chipped away at the deficit and scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a narrow victory over the Loggers.

Luke Haggerty led the Libby offense, going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

Jared Winslow was 3 for 5 from the plate and drove in a run.

The Loggers take on the Kootenai valley Rangers today at 9 a.m.

POLSON — Missoula scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Mavs over the Mission Valley Mariners.

Mission Valley opened with two runs in the top of the first, but could not produce another run after that.

The Mariners were held to five hits — Derek Peel went 2 for 4 and Nyqolas Gillingham doubled.

Mission Valley plays Kalispell at noon today in loser-out action. The Mavs play the Bitterroot Red Sox tonight at 6.
