State A: Glasgow tags Kalispell Lakers

After a rousing win in the opening round, the Kalispell Lakers ran into a buzz saw Friday, falling to Glasgow 13-1 in seven innings as the East champion Reds put up 13 hits and scored in every inning but the fourth at Griffin Field in the second round of the Montana/Alberta American Legion Class A state baseball tournament.

The Lakers looked be to riding the momentum of a first-round win in the first inning, scoring a run three batters in when leadoff hitter Haydn Schlepp slid underneath a tag at home plate on a fielder’s choice.

Glasgow answered quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning, all with two outs. A single from Sam Schultz scored the first run and after a walk, Ryan Padden doubled in two more.

Kalispell would fall behind further in the second, falling out of the top of the inning in three at-bats only for Glasgow to add two more. The Reds doubled in their first two plate appearances, the second off the bat of Jason Thibault to score a run. A single from Gage Legare two batters later scored another.

Lakers shortstop Eric Seaman saved another run to end the inning, diving to catch a line drive up the middle of the diamond and turning a double play with a throw to first.

Kalispell only brought three batters to the plate each of the next three innings as well, falling behind as the Reds began to pile up the runs.

Glasgow scored one in the third, after hitting for three straight singles with two outs. The Reds pulled away in the fifth, reaching six straight batters and benefiting from a pair of errors to score five runs and take an 11-1 lead.

The Lakers picked up their third hit of the game in the sixth, and got two batters on base with one out, but left them stranded. Glasgow hit a pair of doubles and scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Taylor Cady drew a two-out walk for Kalispell in the top of the seventh, but a pop out to first base in the next at-bat ended the game early on the 10-run rule.

“A lot of credit to them. They came out and threw strikes, played defense and hit the ball real well tonight,” Lakers A manager Jesse McFarland said.

“Those are typically things we do well also. It just didn’t happen for us tonight. It’s disappointing, but that’s also a very good baseball team.”

Gunnar Marsh, Torin Bowden and Seaman all went 1 for 3 from the plate for the Lakers.

Spencer Pisk picked up the only RBI on a fielder’s choice in the first inning.

Thibault was 2 for 4 with a double and a pair of RBIs for Glasgow.

The Lakers fall to loser-out play where they will play Lethbridge in an elimination game at 4 p.m. today. The Minors beat Deer Lodge 11-1 in a loser-out game earlier on Friday.

“It should be a real good matchup for us,” McFarland said.

“If we play like we’re capable, I think we’ll be just fine. We’ll take this thing into Sunday and keep this thing going.

“It should be a great matchup. I’m looking forward to seeing how our guys respond.”

Glasgow will play the Bitterroot Red Sox at 7 p.m. in the undefeated semifinal. The Red Sox beat Laurel 6-3 to advance.

Laurel will play the day’s other winner, the Helena Reps, to open play at 1 p.m. today. The Reps beat Vauxhall 14-0 in a loser-out game.

The state winner advances to the regional tournament in Logan, Utah, on Aug. 5-9.

The Glacier Twins won state last year.
