C-Falls girls 3rd at state basketball

HAMILTON — The one-two scoring punch of Winter Kemppainen and Ciera Finberg was too much for Frenchtown as Columbia Falls rolled to a 67-34 victory in the consolation final on Saturday night at the Class A state girls basketball tournament.

Kemppainen dropped in 18 points and Finberg added 14 as the hot-shooting Wildkats posted three straight victories after a 49-47 opening-round loss on Thursday to Butte Central.

Columbia Falls (22-2) jumped in front of Frenchtown 20-11 and enjoyed a 34-15 advantage at intermission.

Kemppainen pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.

Allie Moe topped Frenchtown in scoring with seven points.

It was the fourth meeting of the season for the two Northwestern A rivals.

Columbia Falls won both regular-season meetings with the Broncs — 68-31 and 61-44 — along with the divisional title matchup on Feb. 28 in Whitefish, 53-43.

The Wildkats were ranked No. 1 heading to state.

Columbia Falls also finished third at state a year ago, beating Laurel 54-52 in overtime at Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.

The Wildkats have posted back-to-back 22-2 seasons.

In the championship game, Hamilton defeated Butte Central 58-46.
