Carlyle J. Mikkelson, 82

Carlyle J. Mikkelson, 82, passed away on Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.  

Carlyle was born to Mike and Gertrude (Sangolt) Mikkelson in Ideal Township, McKenzie County, North Dakota, on Feb. 17, 1932. He graduated from eighth grade in Arnegard, North Dakota, and High School at Augustana Academy at Canton, South Dakota, in 1952.

He served in the Air Force for four years beginning in 1952, basic training in San Antonio, Texas, and then on to Cheyenne, Wyoming, to technical school for auto mechanic. He had tours in Alaska, Goose Bay, Labrador and Lake Charles, Louisiana. After returning from the Air Force, Carlyle worked various jobs in the Waterford city area. In 1963, he went to Glacier National Park and worked as a heavy equipment operator and serviced roads in the park until Nov. 30, 1990, at which time he retired.

After retirement he spent time traveling in kayaks. He spent seven years operating a wood shop in Libby; after retiring from the wood shop, Carlyle moved to Columbia Falls. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Gertrude, father Mike, two sisters, his brother Jim, uncle Ole Mikkelson, foster sister Dianne Iverson, sister-in-law Eileen Iverson, and foster father Joseph Iverson. 

Carlyle leaves behind his cousins, Myron Olson, Wanda and Ralph Steen of Arnegard, North Dakota, Carol Jarvis of Illinois, and many other cousins; his foster family, Verna Iverson, of Williston, North Dakota, siblings David and Tina Iverson Ballantine, Montana, Dean Iverson Ferndale, Washington, and Deanna Iverson and Art Lopez of San Jose, California; good friend, Sharon Hanson of Grand Forks, North Dakota; along with a large host of good friends.

The family asks that memorials be sent to Wings for Cancer at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, 310 Sunnyview Lane, Kalispell MT, 59901.

There will be a cookie and coffee reception to celebrate Carlyle’s life held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at Columbia Mortuary.
