BUTTE — Glacier bounced back to defeat Great Falls C.M. Russell 51-42 on Friday afternoon in loser-out play at the Class AA state girls basketball tournament.

Glacier (18-5) jumped on CMR early, leading 18-9. The Wolfpack took a 31-21 lead to the locker room at the half at the Butte Civic Center.

“Coming off a tough loss (Thursday to Billings West), the girls came out really strong,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said.

“They battle hard, didn’t give up. These loser-out games are always tough ones.”

Hailee Bennett led Glacier with 21 points.

“It was good to see her have a big state game,” Salonen said.

“She handled the ball very well.”

CMR’s Taylor Edwards had a game-high 28 points.

CMR (9-14) only outscored Glacier in the fourth quarter.

“Today, we were able to maintain the lead and come away with the win,” Salonen said.

“It’s the first Friday win ever for Glacier at state.”

The Wolfpack plays a loser-out game today at 10:30 a.m. versus Missoula Sentinel at Butte High School.

CLARIFICATION: Salonen said the Wolfpack “played hard to the very end” on Thursday in the loss to West. She said a quote in Friday’s Daily Inter Lake “was never intended to mean that the team gave up.”
