State A boys basketball: Columbia Falls beats Rams; finishes third

BOZEMAN — Ty Morgan scored 14 points to help Columbia Falls slide by Billings Central 34-30 in the consolation final at the Class A boys state basketball tournament Saturday evening at Brick Breeden Field House on the campus of Montana State University.

It was an offensive struggle for both teams, who earlier in the day had to battle through loser-out contests.

Columbia Falls’ best offensive quarter was the fourth when it outscored the Rams 14-9.

Columbia Falls (20-4) could muster just four points in the third quarter to one for Billings Central.

Billings Central (16-8) held a 20-16 lead at the half.

Colin Holetz and Holden Ryan shared scoring honors for Billings Central with eight points each.

Columbia Falls advanced to the third-place game by earlier edging Havre 59-58 in overtime in a game that started at 11 a.m.

Morgan also led the Wildcats in that one with 17 points. Grant Wallace had 16, Grant Stenger 13 and Jayce Fagerland 11.

Columbia Falls won the state championship a year ago.
