Plum Creek committed to valley

Plum Creek Timber Co. is one of the largest investors in the Flathead Valley economy, not just in their extensive real estate holdings but in their willingness to update their manufacturing facilities on a recurring basis to keep them state of the art.

Just recently, Plum Creek confirmed its plans to spend $10 million on plant improvements in the Flathead this year.

That ensures the continuation of hundreds of jobs with a combined payroll of $60 million and represents the company’s commitment to Northwest Montana.

That optimism is based in part on an improving economy, which should mean more housing starts and better timber prices. Now, if only Congress will take action to ensure a reliable source of logs from federal timberlands, the company will be assured of a strong presence here for years to come.

We should also take note of the June 2014 explosion and fire at the Columbia Falls medium-density fiberboard plant. Plum Creek immediately worked to restore the plant, which suffered $10 million in damage.

For the company’s continuing investment in the Flathead, we are grateful.

Stillwater makes its mark

These are heady times at Stillwater Christian School.

Not only did the school stage another impressive fundraising banquet Thursday night (featuring former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee) but Stillwater also is embarking on an ambitious expansion project.

By this fall, the 335 students at Stillwater may be attending a school revamped with a 10,800-square-foot addition that will include six high school classrooms, a lobby, conference room and concessions.

The school’s renovation will provide new space for high school students next to the gym as well as a lobby and commons area that will become a new gathering spot.

The addition will help address the increased popularity of art, music and Montessori preschool programs at Stillwater and also give the school room to grow.

The expansion should make for exciting times at Stillwater Christian.
