Softball roundup: Hellgate hangs on to beat Bravettes

MISSOULA — Missoula Hellgate broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run third inning and held on for a 5-3 Western AA girls softball victory over Flathead on Friday afternoon.

Flathead added two runs in the top of the sixth to complete its scoring.

Hellgate outhit Flathead 8-5. Both teams had one error.

“We hit the ball hard, just hit it right to them all night,” Flathead coach Tasia Gates said.

Kylee Meredith went 2 for 3 for the Bravettes, which included a double.

Rebecca Knutson was 2 for 2.

“Defensively, we made some good plays,” Gates said. “The girls battled. The loss stung a little bit today.”

Flathead (1-17 overall, 1-10 league) beat Hellgate earlier this season, 12-11.

FRENCHTOWN — Morgan Ray checked Polson on three hits, struck out 12 and issued just one walk as Frenchtown blanked the Pirates in a Northwestern A contest.

Frenchtown broke a scoreless tie with a three-run fourth inning. The Broncs added a run in the fifth and pushed four across the plate in the sixth.

WHITEFISH — Libby scored in every inning, getting nine runs in the third en route to a Northwestern A conference victory over Whitefish.

Grace Porterfield and Savannah Eisenbarth both had singles for Whitefish.

Bulldog starting pitcher Halle Reading fanned six batters in her three- inning tour in the circle.

Madisen Monigold and Auria Benefield had three hits each for Libby.

“We held them for 2 1/2 innings,” Whitefish coach Ron Stone said. “We were hitting the ball hard, right at them.

“We’re still a young team,” he added. “We’re showing improvement every game. I’m proud of the girls.”

Whitefish plays at Columbia Falls today at 4 p.m.
