Glacier freshman Annie Hill thought she could have gone faster in the 1,600-meter run at Saturday’s Archie Roe Invitational track meet at Legends Stadium.

As it stood, she just set a meet record, finishing the race in 4 minutes, 49.65 seconds. Former Flathead star Zoe Nelson held the old standard at 5:07.3 set in 2004.

Hill’s time is the second-fastest time ever run in the state and just a second off the all-class state record set by Townsend’s Chiara Warner in 2013.

She was so fast, second-place finisher Gillian Maness of Flathead would have also beaten the old record, finishing in 5:06.38, but was only rounding the last turn when Hill finished.

“My goal was 4:47. I was a little off, but it was OK,” Hill said. “I was one second off my PR. I feel good about it.”

Hill’s was one of a handful of standout performances at the meet, which celebrated its 40th anniversary on Saturday.

Plains’ Hailey Phillips was named the most valuable athlete of the meet, winning three events and breaking a meet record in the process. Phillips won the 200, both the 100 and 300 hurdles, and finished second in the 100.

She broke her own record in the 300 hurdles, finishing in 44.43 seconds to top the mark she set in 2013 by .18 seconds.

Flathead’s Monica White edged Phillips in the 100, Maness won the 3,200 with ease and Janae Moon took the long jump to lead the Bravettes to a team title, beating Glacier by just six points.

The Wolfpack finished 1-2-3 in the girls 800 and won the 1,600 relay.

Glacier senior Keyawana Larson easily won the javelin, throwing 132 feet, 9 inches.

Columbia Falls won a pair of events with Carla Nicosia taking the triple jump and finishing second in the 100 hurdles. Ashley Caffrey cleared 9-6 to win the pole vault.

Bigfork freshman Bryn Morley won the 400, the only individual event she ran. Valkyries teammate Haile Norred finished second in both the 200 and 400 and third in the 100.

A handful of athletes stole the show on the boys side of the meet, led by meet MVP Sean Opland of Troy.

Opland won the 100 and 400, finished second in the triple jump, fifth in the high jump and sixth in the javelin.

Flathead had a pair of double event winners on its way to a comfortable win for the team title.

The Braves’ Chade Gonter swept the hurdles and Jess Beaman the long and triple jump. Tobias Barton won the pole vault and Jaden Anderson the 800 for Flathead.

Bigfork’s Logan Morely won a pair of exciting distance events, edging Flathead’s Sylas Schutt and Jake Perrin in the 3,200, winning by just .14 seconds, and blowing away the field in the 1,600. He finished 10 seconds in front of Schutt in the mile, winning by nearly 100 meters.

“I felt good,” Morley said. “Everything went right. I was just hoping to go out hard. I didn’t really know what I had left.

“It’s really helpful having those guys back there. I knew they were back there so I kept going harder.”

Whitefish’s Jed Nagler cleared 6-5 to win the high jump, just missing at a school record attempt of 6-8 1/2. Columbia Falls’ Ty Morgan won the javelin at 167-4. Glacier swept the relay races.

Hellgate’s Zayne Babbitt won both the shot put and discus by wide margins, throwing 57-8 in the shot, nearly throwing his attempt out of the pit on one attempt.
