WHITEFISH — The Glacier Twins A pushed their winning streak to six games on Sunday afternoon with a baseball doubleheader sweep of the Belgrade Bandits A at Memorial Field.

Glacier (7-1 overall) needed a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 4-3 victory in the American Legion nonconference opener.

Glacier was also in a rally mode for the second game, scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 victory.

Glacier is now 5-0 in one-run games.

“We battled the first game,” Glacier coach Bob Rupp said.

“A good game. They played a lot of small ball and we had to pretty much match it. We had a couple bunts at the right time.”

Tristin Steinwand and Jesse Walburn both went 2 for 3 to key the Twins’ offense in Game 1.

Walburn, who scored the game-winning run in the second game, went 2 for 3 in that one. He also drove in a run.

“The boys played well, never quit,” Rupp said.

“In the second game we had young guys pitching. Bryce Fagerland, it was his first time at A. He pitched well. (Derek) Kastella came in and pitched very well.

“We also played good defense,” Rupp added.

Glacier swept the Missoula Mavericks AA on Saturday, 2-1 and 5-3.

The Twins host the Kootenai Valley Rangers on Saturday in a conference doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.

POLSON — The Kalispell Lakers used solid pitching and timely hitting to take a nonconference doubleheader from the Mission Valley Mariners.

Brandon Maassen and Tyler Whiteaker combined on a 1-hitter in the opener.

Maassen went six innings, allowing one hit, walking seven batters and striking out six.

Whiteaker pitched the seventh.

Andrew Schleusner went 2 for 3 and doubled along with Whiteaker. Jayson Combs, 2 for 3, homered and drove in a run for the Lakers.

Walker Malmin went the distance on the mound in the second outing. He allowed six hits, walked just one and fanned four Mission Valley hitters.

Schleusner again led the hit parade, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Patrick O’Connell went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs.

Whiteaker went 2 for 2 and scored twice.

“Our pitchers did a good job today,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.

“They were getting ahead in the count.

“Brandon (Maassen) settled in, in his first outing back from school. Walker (Malmin) locates well, changes speeds and pitches to contact. He lets the defense work for him. We played some good defense behind (both pitchers).

“Offensively, we’re gradually improving with our approach at the plate.”

The Lakers outhit the Mariners on the day, 16-7.
