This weekend the Port Polson Players will premiere the Irish comedy “Shillelagh.”

The production opens Friday, May 8, and continues May 9 and 15-16 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday shows on May 10 and May 17 begin at 2 p.m. All performances will be at the John Dowdall Theatre in Polson.

The Port Polson Players, along with the Mission Valley Friends of the Arts, have brought more than 20 local actors together for the Irish musical, “Shillelagh.” A shillelagh is a stick, recognized as a symbol of Irishness, used for walking or as a weapon. The production “Shillelagh” is a modern Irish comedy with music written by Neal Lewing. Half of the show features traditional Irish tunes, while the other half consists of new songs written by Lewing, centering on an Irish story of romance and rebellion.

“Montana has one of the highest numbers of Irish descendants in the U.S., so I feel this timely show will resonate with that rich history of our state,” Lewing said on the group’s website.

Tickets for “Shillelagh” are $15 for adults and $14 for students and senior citizens. Call 883-9212 or visit www.portpolsonplayers.com to reserve tickets in advance. Tickets can also be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to showtimes.
